What is the Sustained Investigation?

CollegeBoard defines the Sustained Investigation section of the AP Portfolio as "a body of related works that demonstrate an inquiry-based sustained investigation of materials, processes, and ideas through practice, experimentation, and revision." This involves choosing a unique and personal topic that will be the guiding force behind your portfolio for the next nine months. In the end, you will submit 15 images of your art and its creation. In addition, there is a writing portion in order to delve into your topic and experiences. Below is all of the art and writing I submitted for the Sustained Investigation, portion along with some descriptions and added information.

Identify the question(s) or inquiry that guided your sustained investigation: (600 character max)

We live in a world that has ingrained digital media and technology into our everyday lives, but how will technology and video games' presences, both practical and fantastical, be amplified decades into the future? What would happen if technology and video games continued to collide with reality? What are the different disasters, miracles, and ironic consequences that would occur from this phenomenon? How would human anatomy and limitations transcend morality and biology? How would using digital tools to alter physical artwork add depth and meaning to this collision on another level?

Describe how your sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision guided by your question(s) or inquiry: (600 character max)

My portfolio started by exploring the fusion of reality and the digital world by using both traditional and digital mediums. I used digital painting overlays to alter graphite and charcoal drawings to add symbolism that only traditional materials would not allow. I then experimented with more conceptual digital pieces by combining realism and video game styles, such as a real rat taking over a digital city or a human getting stuck within a TV. Lastly, I explored how human anatomy and limitations would evolve, such as facial customizations and multiple lives.
